If you live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal, you may have tried it and experienced a common side-effect: the desire to fall immediately (and deeply) to sleep. Unsurprisingly, research has found that marijuana usage is associated with greater total sleep time in many adults. While this may be the desired effect among people with insomnia and other sleep disorders, it’s not an ideal side-effect in a fast-paced, modern world.
Although CBD does not create the same “high” effect as using recreational marijuana, they both offer several of the same health benefits. If you’re interested in trying a CBD product such as a CBD supplement or CBD topical cream, you may be wondering: will CBD make me sleepy?
At Oliver’s Harvest, we work hard to bring you the highest-quality, pharmacist-formulated CBD products on the market. Shop at our online store now or continue reading to find out more about CBD and sleepiness.
How Cannabinoids Affect Sleep
If you’ve done any research on cannabidiol (CBD), you may already know that it’s just one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is another one, and it’s the primary psychoactive compound associated with the “high” effect of marijuana. CBD and THC are the most widely recognized and studied cannabinoids.
All cannabinoids work by interacting in some way with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating many essential functions, including immune response, cell communication, memory, metabolism, and more. Research suggests that both THC and CBD affect the user’s relationship with sleep but in very different ways.
THC and Sleepiness
THC encourages its users to sleep by binding to the ECS’s CB1 receptors. This shortens the period of sleep latency, which is the time it takes to go from being fully awake to fully asleep. This interaction could explain why some people who use recreational marijuana fall asleep easily. THC also promotes slow-wave sleep, the deepest phase of non-rapid eye movement sleep, an important part of cerebral restoration and recovery. Despite the increased quantity of sleep, research suggests that THC can impair sleep quality long-term by reducing time spent in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
CBD and Sleepiness
Although CBD also works by interacting with ECS, it doesn’t bind to the same receptors that THC does. Some experts believe CBD works by preventing the body from breaking down endocannabinoids, or perhaps by binding to a receptor that hasn’t been discovered yet. Regardless of the mechanism, CBD interacts with our bodies in an entirely different way than THC and isn’t associated with the same drowsiness.
In fact, research suggests that CBD can act as both a wake-promoting agent, as well a sleep-promoting agent, depending on the dose. One study found that at lower doses (around 15mg per day), CBD acted as a mild stimulant, providing participants with greater concentration and alertness. However, when taken at higher doses (between 160-600mg per day), participants experienced a different side-effect: sleeping for longer periods of time.
When it comes to the question of whether CBD makes people sleepy, the data suggests that it may increase someone’s quantity of sleep, but only at higher doses. On the other hand, small daily doses of CBD may actually provide the user with additional alertness. Regardless of dose, CBD is unlikely to cause the drowsiness associated with THC.
Can CBD Promote a More Restful Night’s Sleep?
Although a low to moderate dose of CBD is unlikely to make you sleepy, it might help you get a better night’s sleep. For many people, it reduces insomnia and sleep disturbances and promotes deeper rest. Additionally, CBD topical creams and supplements may reduce pain levels, decrease inflammation, relieve anxiety, and soothe discomforts that keep you from getting restful sleep.
Overall, CBD touts some impressive results when it comes to promoting better sleep, but so do several prescription medications. So what makes CBD a superior sleep aid? Here are some benefits to choosing CBD over a pharmaceutical:
- It won’t cause a hangover. Many prescription sleep aids will send you into a hard sleep — and leave you there. If you want to wake up fresh, CBD’s a better option.
- It’s non-habit forming. In the midst of a staggering opioid epidemic, an effective sleep aid that won’t cause addiction is a step in the right direction. Unlike hypnotics and sedatives, CBD will not cause dependence.
- It’s an all-natural remedy. At Oliver’s Harvest, all of our CBD is harvested from our non-GMO hemp farms in North Carolina and combined with the highest-quality ingredients available.
- Long-term use won’t cause negative health effects. Research shows people who take prescription sleep medications and even over-the-counter sleep aids are at increased risk of developing certain types of cancer and dementia.
If you’re looking for a better night’s sleep or relief from many of the symptoms that can cause restlessness, such as anxiety, pain and inflammation, CBD might be the right remedy for you. Consider trying Oliver’s Harvest Sleep Support tablets to get the added benefits of melatonin.
How to Find the Right CBD Product for You
Now that you know that moderate daily doses of CBD won’t cause sleepiness but can improve overall sleep quality, maybe you’re ready to find a CBD product that’s right for you. But with so many different brands, forms, doses, and additional ingredients, how do you choose?
Identify Your Desired Outcome
The first step to finding the best CBD product for you is to identify your desired outcome. In other words, what are you hoping CBD can do for you? Your reason for seeking CBD will help determine the form and dosage that’s best suited to your needs.
For example, if you’re looking for an easy, fun way to boost overall wellness, you might want to try our Grab & Go Sour Gummies, but if you suffer from chronic pain, our Full Spectrum Peppermint CBD Oil at a higher dosage would better fit your needs. If you’re experiencing inflammation in a specific joint or muscle, a CBD topical cream like our Pain Cream with CBD & Capsaicin would probably be your best bet. Luckily, you don’t have to figure it out alone — we can help.
Find an Ethical, Quality Brand
In the last decade, the CBD industry has seen an enormous boom. Overall awareness has increased to the point that most people have at least heard of it, and many people have tried it. Unfortunately, many less-than-reputable companies take advantage of its popularity and sell low-quality CBD with misleading claims.
At Oliver’s Harvest, you can be sure you’re getting the best quality product every time. From germination to harvest, to formulation and manufacturing, we use the safest methods and purest ingredients available. Feel free to contact us online with any questions or give us a call at 866-634-3134.
